One Billion Users Per Day YouTube

October 10, 2009 1 comment

When your website first reaches a million visitors, it’s a great milestone. However, one billion views per day can only be attained by the selected few, and YouTube is now one of them.

According to the official blog, YouTube is serving “well over a billion views a day”. That’s at least 11,574 views per second, 694,444 views per minute, and 41,666,667 views per hour. Imagine the web server farm that can withstand that much traffic, and then remember that YouTube is just one of Google’s many properties.

As we wrote earlier this week, YouTube still may not be making enough money to justify the 1.65 billion dollars Google has paid for it, but it definitely makes it up when it comes to visitors.

Spammers Attack On YouTube

October 9, 2009 1 comment

“Researchers at Kaspersky Lab have recorded a mass mailing of spam emails containing a link to a video advertisement on YouTube. Although in the past, spammers have have attempted to lure people into clicking links by claiming the link would display a YouTube video, this is the first case in which the link actually did. In this particular incident, the video in question is a Russian ad promoting industrial real estate.

Two years ago, Kaspersky Lab was predicting that YouTube would eventually become a vector for disseminating spam due to its worldwide popularity. However, this is the first time the video-sharing site has been used in this way as far as the researchers can tell.

How to Upload a YouTube Video on Facebook

October 8, 2009 13 comments

Upload a YouTube Video on FacebookTo upload a YouTube Video on Facebook, is not difficult to do, once you know the steps to do it.
There might be a time, when you’ll find a video over at YouTube that you might want to share with your friends on Facebook. However, when you click on the "video" icon under status, it only allows you to insert a video from your computer.
So, how is it that people are able to insert youtube videos directly on their facebook pages? Here’s how…

Step 1

Go to your Facebook account. At the bottom of the left hand corner, you’ll see the word "Applications". Click on that and then click on "browse more applications".

Step 2

Go to the upper left corner and there will be a box there. In that box, type in the word YOUTUBE and hit the ENTER key on your keyboard.

Step 3

Click on the "YouTube Video Box" application.

Step 4

Click on "Go to Application". When it opens the next page, do absolutely nothing. Do not click on any other item, because at this point, the application is already on your Facebook page.

Step 5

Go back to your home page, and click on APPLICATIONS again at the lower left hand corner. You will now see the new application listed under your most recently used applications at the upper portion of the menu. At this point, click on YouTube Video Box.

Step 6

On this next screen, if you happen to see an ad that mentions something about connecting with singles on facebook, please ignore that. It has nothing to do with your youtube application. On the upper right side, you’ll see a box where you can search for youtube videos. Type in a subject or title of a video that you’re interested in, and hit your ENTER key on your keyboard.

Step 7

You will now see a list of videos that will relate to the words that you typed in your search box. I typed in the word "cruise".

Step 8

Click on the video that you’re interested in. This will allow you to watch the video, and if you decide that this is a video that you would like to share with your friends on Facebook, then click where it indicates "add this video to your favorites / profile".

Step 9

On the next screen, you will have the option to save your video to your profile, and publish it to your profile as well, so your friends can see that you just inserted a video in your youtube video application.

Step 10

If you want to view your videos that you saved at a later time, you can go back to APPLICATIONS, and bring up the YouTube application, and view your videos. This software also allows you to save your friend’s videos that they have published as well.

Use an Old Linux Computer to Put your Baby to Sleep

October 7, 2009 1 comment

baby and linuxIf you are not a geek, let me explain the logic of this very simple program.

The program will first auto-eject the CD-ROM drive of your computer and then it will close that open tray. This open-close loop will run forever unless you terminate the program manually.

while [1 = 1]
 do
	#eject cdrom
	eject

	#pull cdrom tray back in
	eject -t
 done

Now the interesting part — using just these four lines of code, a geek turned his old Linux* computer into a baby rocker.

He attached a string between the tray of the CD-ROM drive and the baby seat and as the tray would open and close repeatedly, the smooth movements were enough to put his baby to sleep. Awesome.

[*] you are not on on Linux, you can build a similar Baby rocker program for Windows using Autohotkey software.
