October 11, 2009 6 comments

Microsoft’s virtualization solution for Windows 7, Windows Virtual PC (VPC) and Windows XP Mode (XPM) final RTM builds have been compiled and signed off as build 7600.16393 on September 22nd, 2009.

Windows Virtual PC requires hardware-assisted virtualization, thus it’s recommended to check and verify system supports hardware virtualization (VT) or not prior to downloading and installing.
The main purpose of Windows Virtual PC, an optional component for Windows 7 is to support application backward compatibility for software and programs that can only run on older versions of Windows. With RemoteApp, which allows application installed on guest operating system to be accessed directly from host operating system (Windows 7) seamlessly, users can run and access virtualized instance of programs without running virtual machine. Windows XP Mode is provided by Microsoft with free Windows XP OS license as a way for users instantly install and run virtualization environment without having to manually install operating system in virtual machine, and have to acquire a genuine product key to activate the installed OS again.

Easiest Install Apps After Reinstall OS

October 10, 2009 Leave a comment

Volery in actionEspecially when we install a new operating system, reinstalling our programs takes up an enormous amount of valuable time. Even when we have an up and running operating system, installing new application usually translates into pausing our important work and supervising the setup process.

How great would it be to be able to select the desired program to be installed, and have it install into our system in the background with all the right options checked? Even more so, how great would it be to do this with multiple applications simultaneously so that while we work, a number of our selected applications install on our system in the background?

Backup Your Files using Skype

October 9, 2009 1 comment

skype for backup“As we amass more data daily on our computers, a quality backup plan becomes increasingly crucial. Backup programs have been in existence for years – some allow you to backup your computer files locally to an external hard disk or a portable drive, while others like Mozy and Carbonite are designed to help you save a backup of your important files and folders to an online web server.

The drawbacks associated with these methods are obvious. Hard disks and portable drives will not last forever and they also can get misplaced easily. If you are using an online backup service, the files will be inaccessible when your internet connection is down and the data would be lost permanently if the backup company goes out of business.

The other big problem is that not everyone feels very comfortable storing their private data online so they are vary of using any remote backup tool.

5 Speedy Tips For Faster Browsing In Firefox

October 9, 2009 1 comment

firefox[1] If you’ve ever used Firefox you’ll appreciate the fact that it’s incredibly easy to use and intuitive right out of the box.  This is perhaps one of the key reasons why it now owns 21.5% of the worldwide browser market share, and Internet Explorer is having its worst month yet.

Frankly speaking, as Internet speeds continue to increase, the loading times of webpages are becoming increasingly less of an issue.  The time saved simply by having a better, more user friendly and clear interface outweighs most gains garnered from a browser which simply loads faster.

Here are 5 excellent tips to make browsing even smoother and faster on Firefox.

1. How to save time by automatically loading the next page

autopager

Autopager is a Firefox extension which automatically loads up the next page of a series of web pages and displays it at the bottom of the screen, when you scroll to the end of the page.

For example, if you were to load up a Google Search, and you were unhappy with the page one results, you previously had to click on a link to take you to page 2 of the results.  With Autopager, all you do is scroll down – saving you the extra click.  Google’s page 2 results would now be appended at the bottom of the page 1 results.  Keep scrolling downwards and you’d see page 3, 4 and so on.

By default AutoPager works with a ton of sites, including the New York Times, Digg, and, of course, Google. If you want to add your own custom autopaging to unsupported sites, the site wizard feature makes it easy to so.  This extension is a true time saver.

2. How to use keyboard shortcuts to get instant results

Firefox comes with a whole range of keyboard shortcuts so you can really speed things up if you’re a power user. Mozilla lots of different shortcuts on their support page, and here are 5 cool keyboard tricks which would come in handy for all Firefox keyboard newbies:

  • Back/Forward Navigation: Alt Left Arrow / Alt Right Arrow
  • Complete .com Address : Ctrl+Enter (When you’re in the URL bar)
  • Zoom In / Out: Ctrl + / Ctrl –
  • Bookmark all tabs: Ctrl Shift D
  • Undo closed tab: Ctrl Shift  T

MakeUseOf now gives away a printable Firefox chet sheet nicely summarizing the “need to know” shortcuts. Apart from Firefox, there are cheat sheets for Gmail, Windows, Mac OS X and several other.

3. How to NOT get bogged down by 404s

errorzilla

Your favorite website down? Rather than visiting it later, or hitting the refresh button incessantly, you can try installing ErrorZilla, a firefox extension which will add Try Again, Google Cache, Coralize, Wayback, Ping, Trace, and Whois buttons, when a website isn’t found or a web server is down.

Think of it as a much more useful 404 error page where rather than just telling you the page doesn’t exist – it allows you to search and visit cached versions of the page.

4. How to load up web pages faster

fasterfox

Fasterfox is an extension which dips under the hood to tweak many network and rendering settings such as simultaneous connections, pipelining, cache, DNS cache, and initial paint delay.

Previously, these were tweaks which you had to manually adjust – but now they work right out of the box once you use this handy extension.

5. How to download files faster

firefox download manager plugin

Originally skeptical when I first tried this out, I have been completely blown away by how effective this software is. DownloadThemAll is a free extension which acts as a download manager (meaning you can pause and resume downloads), and download files faster by having them simultaneously download.  This is quite possibly my favorite extension out of all five.

So there you have it, 5 speedy tips which will helpfully make your browsing on Firefox an even faster, more powerful experience.

What time saving browsing tips for Firefox do you have?  I’d love to hear about them in the comments!

Techniques for Faster Web Browsing with Mozilla Firefox & Internet Explorer

October 9, 2009 5 comments

Though all the browsers are designed to provide users a fast browsing experience; little tweaks here and there can go a long way in increasing the speed of browsers. As attractive an option as it seems, truth be told, in order to make whatever changes we need to improve the speeds of our browsers, we will have to compromise with original registry and browser settings.

Now, this may not be everyone’s cup of tea because modifying the windows registry without proper knowledge may lead on damaging your registry setting, which in turn would seriously affect your Windows Operating System. So, we strongly recommend our readers to backup your Windows registry data before going through any registry changes.

Let’s have a look at some of the leading web browsers regarding how we can optimize their speeds.

Faster Web Browsing with Leading Browsers

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox is generally considered to be the fastest of the browsers available in the market today. If you get to searching, you will find innumerable techniques, many of which can be quite complicated and may lead to data loss. Also most techniques available are for the broadband users. Here, we have not only kept the broadband users in mind but also those who use slower connections like a dialup. In saying so, we have tried to come up with most combinations of computers and the types of connections.

  1. Reduce the amount of RAM Firefox uses for it’s cache feature
    • Type about:config in the address bar in the browser.
    • Click button I’ll be Careful, I promise!
    • Enter browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewer in filter box
    • Set it’s value to 0.
  2. Increase the Speed in Which Firefox loads pages
    • Type about:config in the address bar in the browser.
    • Click button I’ll be Careful, I promise!
    • Modify the values for following entries
      • Set network.http.pipelining to true
      • Set network.http.proxy.pipelining to true
      • Set network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to 12 or more depending upon your internet connection speed
    • At last, right-click anywhere and select New > Integer. Name it nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set its value to 0.
  3. Reduce RAM usage to 10mb when Firefox is minimized
    • Type in about:config and then press Enter.
    • Click button I’ll be Careful, I promise!
    • Right Click in the page and select New > Boolean.
    • In the box that pops up enter config.trim_on_minimize and Press Enter.
    • Now select True and then press Enter.
    • Restart Firefox.
  4. Optional Configurations

Optionally here are some more options for your about:config (you might have to create some of these entries by Right Click –> New– > Integer (value 0 & 5) or String (for true & false)

    • Create network.dns.disableIPv6 and set it to false
    • Create content.notify.backoffcount and set it to 5
    • Create plugin.expose_full_path and set it to true
    • Create ui.submenuDelay and set it to 0

Internet Explorer

  1. Increase the number of simultaneous HTTP connections & downloads that IE makes to a Web server

Internet Explorer 8 limits you to download one to six simultaneous downloads depending upon your internet connection speeds and Internet Explorer 7 and it’s earlier versions limits that number to one to two simultaneous downloads. If you have broadband internet connectivity, changing these setting will increase your Internet Explorer speed and browsing experience. Those setting for simultaneous downloads can be increased maximum of 16 connections by making changes on registry settings.

There is a “Microsoft Fix It” tool that will automatically fix this issue and increase the number of files that you can download at one time to 10.

Click here to download or run it.

If you want to make changes on registry manually or want to have more information about this Techniques Click Here.

  2. Turn off Phishing Filter

Phishing filter is a feature that supposedly avoids tour system from accessing a website that disguises as an original website but isn’t so. This feature of Internet Explorer 7 will help you to protect from online phishing scams but this feature while enabled will slow down the loading time and speed of the web pages.

This feature can be disabled on IE7 from:

Tools > Phishing Filter > Turn off automatic website checking, there turn it off.

  3. Turn off automatic checking for RSS feeds

Usually happens with IE7 and is known to reduce the speed of browser. This feature can be disabled on IE7 from if you really don’t use it:

Tools > Internet Options > Content > Feeds > Settings > Uncheck all the boxes shown there.

  4. Turn Off Clear Type

“Clear Type” will render your texts in browser smoothly but there were a lot of people who doesn’t like this kind of font smoothing and using this feature obviously will use your system memory more than that of normal. So if you want to disable it:

    • Open IE7
    • Open Tool Menu
    • Click Internet Options
    • Click Advanced Tabs
    • Under Multimedia, clear the Use ClearType or Always use ClearType for HTML checkbox
    • Click Ok
  5. Installing Google Chrome Frame for Internet Explorer 6, 7, or 8

Use an Old Linux Computer to Put your Baby to Sleep

October 7, 2009 1 comment

baby and linuxIf you are not a geek, let me explain the logic of this very simple program.

The program will first auto-eject the CD-ROM drive of your computer and then it will close that open tray. This open-close loop will run forever unless you terminate the program manually.

while [1 = 1]
 do
	#eject cdrom
	eject

	#pull cdrom tray back in
	eject -t
 done

Now the interesting part — using just these four lines of code, a geek turned his old Linux* computer into a baby rocker.

He attached a string between the tray of the CD-ROM drive and the baby seat and as the tray would open and close repeatedly, the smooth movements were enough to put his baby to sleep. Awesome.

[*] you are not on on Linux, you can build a similar Baby rocker program for Windows using Autohotkey software.
